WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A Wood County judge has sentenced a 22-year-old Marshfield man convicted of killing his former girlfriend to at least 40 years in prison. “Today is about Maisie (E. McCullough,)” said her father, George McCullough. “She was a very special young woman —not just to me, her father, but to the world.” George McCullough asked Wood County Circuit Judge Todd Wolf to impose whatever sentence he deemed necessary for Gabriel L. Campos, who was convicted of killing Maisie McCullough. The sentence won’t bring any comfort, George McCullough said. Campos will need to apply for extended supervision after he serves 40 years for the first-degree intentional homicide involving Maisie McCullough, 18, Marshfield. A board will determine at that time whether to release Campos on extended supervision. Campos pleaded guilty to the charge on May 29. According to the criminal complaint, on Sept. 7, 2012, Campos’ mother, Michelle Lang, found McCullough’s body in the bathtub of Lang’s home, which the three had shared. McCullough, who had a son with Campos, was in the process of moving out. An autopsy showed McCullough died of multiple sharp-force injuries to the neck, torso and left hand, according to the complaint. She had a 5-inch cut across the front of her neck, a stab wound on the right side of her upper back and cuts on her left thumb and index finger. Campos took his son and left Marshfield, then he later contacted authorities from a Wisconsin Rapids hotel, according to the complaint. He told authorities he wanted to turn himself in to lessen the impact on his son.
