In 1989 facing the final battle against a formidable foe our football generals fired the psychologist a few days earlier, and then subjected the team to a grueling road journey of many hours from deep south in non air conditioned maxi taxis (I think), where they were mobbed by adoring fans along the way, robbing them of the last few critical hours of focus on the game ahead, so that by the time they sauntered on the field of play there was no time left to rekindle that fighting spirit. As I remember only one man on that day had kept the fire burning. Now in 2014 another team, this time of amazon warriors, who throughout an under supported campaign against well supported rivals developed the strength to prevail against all odds, external and self imposed, and gearing up for that final battle, WE conspire to distract them with a gift of MONEY before the battle is even fought. Did Caesar give his Roman centurions rewards before their campaigns? In a cabinet of twenty something people was their no man or woman who could say Madame Prime Minister could we look at this more carefully, or is the timing right? Raymond! RaymondI Raymond! I sincerely hope we are not going to repeat our 1989 tears while we drown our sorrows in drink at the bars in St James and across our twin island nation. At 4:42 AM this Thursday morning I am both mad and sad. I wish I could cry but the tears just will not come.
