WORKERS AT ITEZHI TEZHI HYDRO GO ON STRIKE A FEW DAYS AFTER SCOTTS VISIT WORKERS at a Chinese firm -Sino hydro that is constructing the US $250 million Itezhi Tezhi hydroelectric power plant have gone on strike to protest against wages they claim are below minimum wage. And suspected PF cadres at Sino Hydro have stolen a computerized equipment which the company has been using to navigate the construction works at the site. Meanwhile, police in Itezhi-tezhi have impounded a PF campaign truck which some suspected PF cadres used to steal cement at the Sino Hydro power plant. The workers downed tools yesterday, just few days after Acting President Dr. Guy Scot went to Itezhi-tezhi district to check on the project. The workers are demanding for better condition of service and improve salaries failure to which they will vote for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema. The workers took to the streets and protested while showing UPND symbol and have vowed that they will not go back to the construction site until their demands are met. The striking workers are accusing the Chinese state firm of paying them wages that are below minimum wage legislation. They said they have no resting days, no annual vacation leave for the Zambian workers while their Chinese counterparts enjoyed such privileges. And suspected PF cadres at Sino Hydro have stolen a computerized equipment which the company has been using to navigate the construction works at the site. This has led the Chinese company threatening to withdraw its works at the site if the computerized equipment is not recovered. Meanwhile, police in Itezhi-tezhi have impounded a PF campaign truck which some suspected PF cadres used to steal cement at the Sino Hydro power plant. The police have since recovered 56 bags of cement which was loaded on the PF truck which has Edgar Lungu’s campaign portraits on it.
