WORKOUT TIP: Varying things regularly in your workouts can really help you to progress faster and break through plateaus. And a great exercise parameter to vary is the tempo of your reps. That basically refers to the speed of your movements and the length of your pauses. Using slower movements with pauses in the loaded position increases the time under tension, which is great, but it also fatigues your muscles quicker and therefore makes it necessary to use lower loads. Using fast, explosive movements produce very high peak loads, but lead to a short time under tension. Using long pauses (2 to 5 seconds) between reps gives your muscles more recovery time, allowing you to work with more weight. There are many variations and combinations you can use. For example, an explosive concentric movement followed by a slow (5 second) eccentric movement, or slow movements with no pauses, or fast movements with long pauses, and so on. These all bring their unique benefits and you should try to mix things up as much as you can to keep your body out of its comfort zone! - Fabian.
