WORLD CUP 2014 PREVIEW The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil starts Thursday night at 23:00! This tournament takes place in Brazil on the South American continent and will most likely be won by the home nation Brazil. If I had any doubts they vanished last season when Brazil impressed immensely in the Confederations Cup, which also took place in Brazil. Something happens when Brazil play on home soil, there is a very special bond between fans and players and there is no limit to what their players can achieve. Forget about pressure, the Brazilian players thrive on the attention from fans and their media. Players like Hulk, David Luiz, Fred and Neymar for that matter, not always producing for their clubs, were improved beyond description in the Confederations Cup last season. It will be tough for European nations in this tournament and I see Argentina as the logical runner up to Brazil. It is their chance, their big chance, much like Brazil, to win the World Cup. I can assure you, it is not empty words, the advantage for the South American nations in this World Cup is huge. More than once this season I have come to the conclusion that Lionel Messi obviously has reserved much of his energy this season for the World Cup. Not everyone would agree, but for me it has been crystal clear. Argentina arguably have the best set of strikers, or what do you think of Messi, Higuain, Aguero and Lavezzi, not forgetting the excellent Di Maria. The bookmakers are thinking along the same lines with Brazil 4.00 favourites and Argentina, the prime challengers, priced 5.50. Should Suarez recover completely in time for the World Cup I can see Uruguay enjoying a strong tournament. Winning may prove difficult, but they could be worth backing, as they are overpriced in my opinion (28.00). The top rated European sides Germany and Spain offer poor value priced 6.50 and 7.00 respectively. They are not my teams this time around and I prefer the odds on Uruguay (28.00) Belgium (15.00), Chile (50.00), Netherlands (30.00) and Italy (25.00) to those of Germany and Spain. OK you can never rule out a side like Spain, they have won everything in this last decade and they are dominating the European club football, but I cannot ignore how they were outclassed by Brazil last season. They will not defeat Brazil or Argentina in this World Cup and that is my firm belief. Germany look short upfront, no strong number nine, sorry Miroslav Klose, and you need a strong striker to succeed at this level. Belgium? They look exciting, the future is theirs, but will they be in contention already in this tournament? Well, they are placed in an easy group and they can go a long way in Brazil. They can at least match the top European teams, but you know what I think about Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and maybe also Chile. These South American sides will be extremely difficult to defeat. Chile are playing in a very competitive group along with Spain and Netherlands and I do not think that Chile will be the team to leave after the group phase. OK, Chile need Vidal perfectly fit to succeed and he has just been through some kind of surgery. What about 150.00 on the Ivory Coast? Ya Ya Toure’s Ivory Coast are filled with great players and they are my favourite African side. I can see Bony as their new top striker and I prefer the Swansea forward to S Kalou and D Drogba. The super speedy Gervinho and Bony? Why not! I know, African sides usually struggle on the World Cup scene, but one of these days this is bound to change and this version of the Ivory Coast have a huge potential. They remind me of Cameroon from 1990.
