WORLD RADIO DAY The objective of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of radio The World Radio Day, 2014, a day to celebrate radio as a medium, is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe in a befitting manner. The United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) in its 36 general conference on November 3, 2011 has approved a proposal to celebrate the day on February 13 across the world. The objective of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio and enhance networking among broadcasters. T he government, Bangladesh Betar and private radio stations in the country have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day through airing special programmes highlighting the significance of the day. Under the programmes, Bangladesh Betar will bring out a colourful rally from National museum tomorrow at 9:30am as Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu will lead the rally. In the afternoon, a seminar titled Problems, Prospects and Development of Radio in Bangladesh would be organized at Bangladesh Betar Bhaban in the citys Sher-e-Banglanagar at 3:30pm. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam will attend the seminar as the chief guest. Later, a cultural function would be held at Betar Bhaban at 7:00pm. Social Welfare Minister Mohsin Ali will be the chief guest in the function. Apart from these, private radio stations will organize separate programmes highlighting the importance of the day. Meanwhile, President Md. Abdul Hamid, Prima Minister Sheikh Hasina and Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu gave separate messages highlighting the importance of the day. The President said Bangladesh Betar has been playing an important role in creating mass awareness on different national issues along with broadcasting educational, recreational and informative programmes. Describing radio as the strongest, oldest and biggest mass media, he said the medium has been able to reflect the hopes and aspiration of general masses during the countrys Great War of Independence in 1971. He said the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendro had been emerged as a second front during the Liberation War. He hoped that the Betar (Radio) stations in the country would be able to uphold its glorious role through airing programmes as per desired of the listeners by facing various challenges in the modern era. The Prime Minister in her message said the use of Betar has increased in all developed countries like Bangladesh as it has been emerged as the oldest, popular and effective medium. In this connection, she said alongside the freedom fighters,the role of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendro during the countrys War of Liberation has inspired the beleaguered nation to achieve freedom. She expressed hope that the Betar channels in the country will go for online broadcast on the way to build a digital Bangladesh. Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu said in terms of broadcast proximity and timeliness, Betar has been emerged as the most strongest and biggest mass media that can reach everywhere across the globe. Along with creating awareness, it (Betar) has been playing an important role to educate and entertain people through broadcasting various programmes, he said and wished all success of the programmes of the day
