WOW! Today there was a Eid gathering at the home of some dear friends so I went for a few hours. On my way home, I went through Tim Horton’s to buy myself a cup of coffee and out of the blue the person who got their coffee before me stops her car a few feet away and gets out while I am still at the window paying for my coffee. She proceeds to shout and scream, “Are you f****** crazy? Are you f****** out of your mind?” and the racial slurs about my hijab and a whole bunch of other crazy things flew left and right out of her mouth. Let me say this clearly, what Muslim women wear, is none of anyone’s business. If it scares a person or makes a person feel uncomfortable then I suggest the person look the other way, look down or look up, but know that my sister’s and I don’t dress to please people. Also, pleasing people is insignificant and irrelevant. We seek to please the creator. Furthermore, we think people should keep their backwards opinions to themselves. Yes it is backwards to be intolerant of the beliefs of others. It is backwards to think that the “American” way of life is superior to the way of life of others. It’s not, and you know what? We do not have to “assimilate” and “fit in.” As long as we are not breaking the law and we are following the rules of the country that we are living in, we will not change the way we look, dress or act in the name of “assimilating” or “fitting in.” I was born and raised here. I am as American as apple pie, if a person doesnt like the way my sister’s and I look and the way we dress that’s too bad! #disappointedanddisheartenedonthedayofEid
