WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA EVENT: Note from Diana Pitts: It’s that - TopicsExpress

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA EVENT: Note from Diana Pitts: It’s that time of year again!! This is our fifth year of hosting a Wreaths Across America event at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. The purpose of this event is to Remember and Honor our military, and to teach our children why we have our freedoms here in America. Part of this effort is to place wreaths on the deceased/fallen military veterans within the hallowed grounds of one of our nations 14 original National cemeteries along with over 900 locations worldwide. In 2008 myself and a few friends attended our first Wreaths Across America event. We helped to get wreaths sponsored at that location the next year in 2009. A few of us realized we could open Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery to an event and in 2010, did so. Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery has been closed to the everyday burial since the late 1980’s. It only has spaces for those who are Killed in Action, spousal burial of those veterans already interred there or cremations. We have learned through different guest speaking venues, fundraisers etc. that we have been part of, that Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery is often not even known about. This for a few reasons, the similar naming of the two National Cemeteries within about 5 miles of each other, the few burials it has, and that it sets on the historic Army base of Fort Leavenworth, (people believe access may be difficult or confusing to the cemetery due to the security checks). There are approximately 22,000 military markers within Ft. Leavenworth National Cemeteries grounds. In 2010 there were 572 wreaths sponsored which has grown to just under 2,800 last year. We chose a predetermined section each year due to not having enough sponsored for the entire cemetery. This way, each section of veterans is honored over the years. Our ultimate goal is to see every beautiful, white marble military marker, representing a military servicemember honored. This is a two fold letter. 1) To invite you to come and participate in the ceremony and event which is Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, located on the historic military base of Fort Leavenworth KS, the ceremony begins at 11:00 Central time at the base of the American flag pole. 2) To assist us to honor more deceased/fallen veterans military markers with a wreath. If you feel so inclined to help with this mission we are a group that has elected to be a three for two. We receive one additional wreath, sent to the location for every two sponsored. Betty Wright is our sponsorship group leader. She can advise how to accomplish this either with a check written and mailed to her or for direction on how to navigate the WAA website. Betty can be reached at (913) 908-1575 or betty7312@gmail. While our main focus is Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery we also help to route inquiries to cemeteries locally and across the nation. We believe in honoring our military regardless of where they lay in eternal rest. Please share this letter as you see fit to spread the mission and awareness of Wreaths Across America. Please feel free to contact me with questions.
