WSSC athlete mike (football EFL) completing bounds (cont) + prowler sprint + unloaded sprint (3-4 s duration) for development of low load power, high load power and velocity (speed) - linear training At WSSC we believe in developing the athletes entire neuromuscular profile via WSSC 5 areas of strength & power development for our athletes; 1. Slow velocity strength 2. Fast velocity strength 3. Stretch shorten cycle 4. Rate of force development 5. Inter muscular coordination (motor learning = skill to the expression of strength) For development of the total athlete you need to be holistic, understand science, programming but also be multi factorial in your approach in coaching/programming as everything reverts back to the athletes goals, sport and training age = individualisation is king! Most athletes programming follows the traditional strength training primal patterns (3 x 10) or split part, isolation, slow velocity, body building programs ... That trains muscle groups not motor patterns (movements)! This training only trains one area of the F-V (force velocity curve) and leaves out developing the velocity/speed side of the curve... Once a basic strength base has been established. (**force-velocity curve vital to understand for performance coaches to maximise strength and power development ... Relationship between force output and speed of movement - as external load increases force (strength) is development and power/speed is not the desired adaptation (actual vs intention to move quick) Athletes need to complete training that mimics the the velocity/speed encountered during sport = velocity specific! This will best prepare the athlete for competition and athletic performance. Forces are produced rapidly not over prolonged periods of time in sport so it would make sense (one a basic strength foundation has been developed) the athlete will develop the explosive power & speed needed for the sport > will integrating with the specific skill at training > transference > specific conditioning & motor patterns > athletic performance Performance coaching and programming is multi factorial not just developing one athletic attribute and hoping for the best. Its kind of like coaching Olympic lifting to field based sport athletes and just training them for O lifts ... Remember our job is about sporting performance, we have limited time to create a stimulus for adaptation (need to be time effective) and also need develop strength, speed, agility, work capacity but also integrate with skills training. In the end you might get better at o lifts but will that improve your sporting performance ... Remember the end goal! Info@woodfordssc or PM. #wssc #changingthegame
