WURIU RETURNS TO THE EAST Wuriupranala, one of the two - TopicsExpress

WURIU RETURNS TO THE EAST Wuriupranala, one of the two daughters of Mudungkala the Creator and thus one of the first women, was given the task of keeping alight a torch of blazing bark. As the Sunwoman, she had to travel daily across the sky, the flames of her torch providing the world with light and heat. Sun-woman is beautiful, washes herself in all her colours, morning and evening. Each dawn she would commence her journey from the top of a mountain high in the east. Before she set out, she powdered her body with red ochre, the dust of which, flying into the air, reddened the clouds of early morning. She carried her food in a palmleaf basket and her hair was decorated with a dingo-skin ornament. At midday she made camp and, on a fire lit from her torch, cooked the food she had brought with her or had collected in the morning. At last, in the evening, the Sun-woman would rest for a while on a mountain on the western horizon. Here she again powdered her body, creating the vivid sunsets. Then she extinguished her torch and, having rested for a while beside the celestial lagoon, Kumpinulu, she began her return journey east along a path through the subterranean world, Ilara. On her way back, she was guided only by the glow from her smouldering torch. youtube/watch?v=JLSJkq-JSdM
