Waikanae Masters 2 – Waikanae Youth 5 Ok, so it was another in the 2013 season we can file into the “one that got away” basket, a frustrating day at the office it was. In fact with 5 minutes gone I was starting to think this match was going to be a walk in the park, Youth’s top-of-the-table claims more confusing than a hungry sparrow hoping for a worm on an artificial pitch. We seemed only to be playing at half speed but still managing to have the lion share of possession and playing at will. That was until Ari put Cat through 1 on 1 with the Youth keeper care of an absolute peach of a ball, would he power drive? slot to the right? dribble around? ....... no, all of the above resulting in something more akin to a footballing Combination Fried Rice, the keeper saving easily. And that kinda set the tone. We were having shots cleared of the line, hit the woodwork, and even Pete wound up with a shot not seen since his memorable gem at Weka Park last year, but nothing was going our way. And so, despite prematch huddle questions on how we went 3 – 0 down early on last time round with Youth, we capitulated and went in to the break again, 3 – 0 down. Second half showed more promise and resolve. We again dominated and pressed to get of the mark. Finally, it came down to a Dave Q curler into the top right. It was seemingly small reward for the effort we were putting in. But never-the-less it was a glimmer of hope. We looked for all money like the team that was leading 3 – 1, and even ex-master and now coach of Youth, Craig Weiss, was heard to ask ever so nicely with a “Please” for his Youth team to up the work rate. And they did. They scored another two and Young Jimmy chose the direct route with a no nonsense drive to add to our tally. 2 – 5 Full time for the Hardiless Masters. The aftermatch at the clubrooms and well dressed stand-in manager Wayne spoke for the team, awarding MOM to keeper Jeff ........ for not letting in 10! Summed up our frustration on the day. Worthy of note was Brucie, I thought he had to be on the short list on the day. No DOD or BHD. Well done Jeff! The WAG’s slowly filled the side-line, though down on numbers from last week. Thanks Brendon for again ref’ing and Wayne for running the bench ...... and not subbing me off before I was ready this time! I will be partaking the traditional COW mid-season break this week to sharpen my pencil, and to spice things up weaving his literal magic, guest wrapper Pete will again take the stand. Thanks Pete and I look forward to reading about all the goings on against Levin this week Pete!
