Walked into a gallery here in Hilo a couple of weeks ago. A lady was talking to the owner and said she despises the use of post production such as Lightroom or Photoshop in general. Long before digital photography, in order to get the effects I needed in my portfolio work for clients, I selected the type of film, lens, filter, flash needed to compose the shot. I pushed the film if necessary, developed it hotter or cooler depending on the effect I needed on skin tone or landscape temperature desired. Once the contact sheet was produced I would break out my retouching kit and a loupe and make necessary Corrections for blemishes, hair, whatever. Then Id use my enlargers sensor to determine exposure and Id then dodge and burn to get the desired shading and highlighting and tilt the photo frame to straighten out the horizon. Id use the right photopaper to get the right texture or toning needed for the finished product. Now I simply use sliders and digitally correct any imperfections. Times and technique have changed, but I still believe whether youre old school or a modern photographer, we all correct to some degree whether it be during composition or post process. Any thoughts?
