Walt Disney’s Barn Another landmark at Griffith Park. The Then actually begins outside of the valley, with the resting place of the barn being the Now. Walt’s passion for trains drove him to build a miniature scale railroad in the backyard of his 5 acre property on Carolwood Drive in Holmby Hills. The track is complete with bridges and tunnels, which were included to go over and around his wifes flower gardens. He helped design a barn for the movie, So Dear to My Heart (which he produced). He then created a miniature replica of the barn in his backyard. That barn is the subject of this post. Walts barn is billed as The birthplace of Imagineering. It was in the barn, with his trains, that Walt got one of the very first inspirations for what would eventually be called Disneyland. Diane Disney Miller, Walts eldest daughter, in late 1998 arranged for volunteers to dismantle and remove the barn from the Carolwood property, piece by carefully labeled piece. The Walt Disney Family Foundation was able to negotiate the creation of an enclave within an enclave to accommodate public viewing of the barn as a museum protected within the grounds of the Los Angeles Live Steamers. Today, Walts Barn is a living showcase of Walts passion for railroading. Operated by the non-profit Carolwood Foundation, Walts Barn is filled with trains of all scales. Many of Walts personal items and tools are displayed including work benches he built himself. Every third Sunday of the month, Walts Barn is open to the public.
