Walter Marocchi Mala Hierba: The song faces the theme of exile and separation, but it is also a hymn to music for being able to cross the boundaries of nations. In 1923 Turkey and Greece signed a treaty which imposed a massive population exchange between the two countries based on religious identity. We have tried to express the uprooting through the words of two poets, the turkish Nazim Hikmet and the greek Vassilis Vassilikos, and even musically the song is split in two, the first part incorporating atmospheres from Anatolia and West Turkey and the second deeply rooted in zeibekiko, a traditional greek rhythm. It’s been challenging to include in an Italian band record a song sung both in Turkish and Greek, and being so settled in these countries’ history, we don’t think it has been done before…but we also think this story is universally speaking.
