Want to know the SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES? READ. THE SCHOOL Established in 1976, the School of Health Sciences was seen as solution to the lack and the inequitable distribution of health professionals serving rural communities in the Philippines. The School had its humble beginnings in a two-classroom building and a small nipa hut at the Danio Z. Romueldez Hospital (now the East Visayas Medical Center) it transferred to its present campus in Palo, Leyte. Unique among the colleges and schools of the University of the Philippines, the SHS admits students who are nominated by their respective barangays. Educational attainment, and honors received are not the main criteria for entry in the school. Also, students are not required to take the highly competitive UP College Admission Test (UPCAT). The dire need of the community for a health professional remains the top priority in selecting students for admission into the school. The innovative step-ladder curriculum, the first of its kind in Asia is currently bing used by the school in training its students. Known to be very effective in addressing health manpower problems, this strategy has been used as a model by several community-based health training programs worldwide. With the continuing problem of the country to retain health professionals and to encourage them to serve remote rural communities, the SHS continues to struggle to meet current health manpower demands. The SHS is able to sustain its training through partnerships of the university with various government agencies and private donors. Despite limited resources, the SHS remains true to its mission to bringing the benefits of care to those who need it the most.
