Want to learn more about being a teaching artist? Join the fantastic Fifth House Ensemble for workshops at DePauw University this weekend. School of Music Convocation: Fifth House Ensemble, Artists-in-Residence Friday, September 13, 2013 10:20–11:20 a.m. Green Center, Kresge Auditorium The innovative chamber-music group presents “Putting Your Audience Center Stage.” Much of what classical musicians focus on has to do with crafting programs. Mostly Mozart? Basically Beethoven? Russian Symphony Night? Fantastic! We know how to create thematic connections between musical works, but is that what it takes to engage new audiences in our art? This workshop teaches the basics of psychographic audience analysis through hands-on, interactive activities and case studies. Understanding audiences allows artists to put the public at the center of not only their marketing efforts, but also the program design itself. Meet at the Market: Fifth House Ensemble, Artists-in-Residence Saturday, September 14, 2013 10:00–11:30 a.m. Farmers’ Market, Downtown Greencastle Whether you go for the beignets or the homemade blueberry jam, you’ll want to make a point of heading to the Farmer’s Market this Saturday when members of the Fifth House Ensemble, one of Chicago’s most innovative chamber ensembles, will offer an informal, open-air community concert at the Market on the Square. Stop by and say hello to DePauw’s new artists-in-residence! Fifth House Residency Workshop: “Curriculum-Integration on Stage and in the Classroom” 1:30–2:30 PM Green Center, Room 1115 5HE’s Director of Educational Programming demonstrates live examples of the ensemble’s curriculum-integrated programming. Feel like a kid again as you participate in small and large-group activities, presented in the same way as they have been in classrooms and assemblies throughout the Chicago area and nationwide. We will share our philosophy as teaching artists, techniques for engaging students with limited musical backgrounds in composition activities, and practical examples of how to design lessons that create connections between musical concepts and core curricular subjects. Fifth House Residency Workshop: “Music Can Tell a Story” Saturday, September 14, 2013 2:50–3:50 p.m. Green Center, Room 1115 5HE members teach participating musicians to perform their signature OneShot! concert titled “Music Can Tell a Story.” In this interactive performance, the chamber ensemble uses small and large-group activities to explore the ways that composers create character, setting and plot through music. 5HE performs this show side-by-side with participating musicians in local public schools. fifth-house
