Want to spend a summer interning on the coast of FL? From my pal Holly Chichester.... This is a final call for interested candidates for the FL Tech Summer Horticulture Internship program! All application information is due back to me (email is fine) by 5 pm next Friday, April 4th! After our successful inaugural internship effort last summer, the Florida Institute of Technology is once again offering two paid summer Horticulture Maintenance internships from mid-May to mid-August (ending August 9th or 16th, depending on the student’s schedule). The interns will work directly with the Grounds crew at the main campus of Florida Tech, under the supervision of me, the University Horticulturist. I am a graduate of Virginia Tech (B.S., Horticulture, Landscape Design & Contracting, ‘99) and a FNGLA Certified Horticulturist and ISA Certified Arborist since 2002. I also recently completed the Society of Municipal Arborists Municipal Forestry Institute in Nebraska City, Nebraska—so rest assured, your students will have access to continued horticultural and arboricultural influence and inspiration during their stay! Florida Tech is situated on Intracoastal waterway and the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida. We have a 130 acre main campus, 54 acres of which are turf, 35 acres are Botanical Garden (“the Jungle”), but only 15 of that has currently been developed. The rest is encompassed by buildings, associated hardscapes and landscape plantings. Founded in 1958, we are a relatively young university, but most definitely on the move. Of note, Florida Tech is the only independent, technological university in the Southeast, was recently listed as a “Tier 1 Best National University” by U.S. News & World Report and we were named by Forbes as one of America’s Best Colleges. We also just recently received recognition as an Arbor Day Foundation Tree Campus USA, a designation for which we are thrilled. A program flyer is attached. Thank you for taking the time to read this email and I appreciate your support in our internship program. Again, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you or your students may have. All the best, Holly Holly M.
