Wanted to take a moment to NOT talk about this mess the world is - TopicsExpress

Wanted to take a moment to NOT talk about this mess the world is in, and reflect on the retirement of Derek jeter of the New York Yankees. Years ago, I had the opportunity to hear Columnist George Will speak passionately about baseball while sitting on what was Braves Field in Boston. I just heard him make a comment about Jeter that made SO much sense. Wallace asked: Who better than George Will. What stands out for you about Jeter on the field and off the field? WILL: The fact that theres no difference. The fact that theres no off the field Jeter distinguished from the superb professional on the field. Never once in his 20 seasons was he the best player in baseball, but he always exemplified something that the American people hunger for, which is confidence and professionalism. 20 years ago right now, Chris, the World Series had been canceled. Baseball was in a mess. When they came back after that labor dispute, they had the good fortune to have Cal Ripken and his streak to reconnect with the country. This year theres a rivalry obviously between Major League Baseball and the NFL. The emblem of the NFL is a grainy elevator tape from an Atlantic City casino. The face of baseball is Derek Jeter. Major League Baseball can live with that. Something to think about. One guest, Jane Harman, (Former Democratic Congresswoman from CA) summed up my feelings on Derek jeter. She said: Im not a Yankees fan, but I am a Derek jeter fan. Guy has been nothing but classy in just about everything he did, both on and off the field. Have to say, I wish he had worn a Boston Red Sox uniform, but even in Yankees pinstripes, he was a role model to emulate, unlike the majority of thugs in many of our other sports. Best of luck to you, Captain Jeter....rather fitting that you closed out your career, and made your last hit in Americas oldest baseball park. Baseball will go on, but I doubt well see the likes of you for a long, long time, if ever. I still hate the Yankees, but am a fan of you! Homey
