Wanted to update everyone on George, especially since I may be posting a fundraising site soon. She had her stitches out last Wednesday. And although there was little bleeding (they were pretty tight), the wound was completely closed. Thursday afternoon, we met with the oncologist. Both John and I really liked him. He introduced himself by his first name, instead of Dr...and was very calm and personable. He feels the vet did a great job with the workup and the surgery. He said he wouldnt have done anything differently. He also said its highly likely that the cancer will come back and reiterated that its very aggressive. He strongly urged us to give her the canine melanoma vaccine, Oncept. The 3-4 year survival rate with surgery and the vaccine is 75%. Surgery alone is about a year, maybe less. She would need 4 injections over 8 weeks and two boosters, at 6 months and a year. For a grand total of $4200! Oncept is human DNA coded for the specific protein that produces the cancer. We knew from our vet that it was expensive. However, this is about twice what we were expecting. As you can imagine, we are reeling from that figure! George will only be 7 in March and still has a lot of good working days ahead of her. We just dont know what were going to do. Someone at work suggested a crowdfunding website similar to Kickstarter and Im looking into it. If we do go that route, Ill most likely post it here and on Twitter.
