Warning: Lost Winded Post ahead.. One day I read a Craiglist Free post in a nearby town 15 minutes from our house, two good looking bureaus, almost too good to be true. (the other was my post yesterday morning with all the inlaid veneer) The furniture Gods were with me that day, or so I thought. I was the first response, was told come on over and get them. I quickly coerced my then 19 yr old son (a former high school wrestler) to come with me to help load them into the pickup truck. Once we arrived at this house I noticed not much furniture in the rooms and boxes here and there. My son and I decided to tackle the largest piece first. The insides of every drawer were flocked and it was 6 long and 3 high. We couldnt remove the drawers as they had some sort of locking mechanism on the slides. It wasnt a bureau but a very solid dinning-room sideboard. Absolute love at first sight. My son and I each grabbed an end and lifted. I felt my whole back twist and I painfully whispered Put it down. Suddenly it dawned on me, I turned to the home owner, asked if they were moving IN, he replied yes. I then asked if the former owners had left this behemoth behind. Yes, indeed, the former owners had determined it was easier to leave this for the new owner to deal with, then to lug it out themselves. My son looked at me and shook his head no, no as in we shouldnt take it, too heavy, not worth it. I whispered back WE are NOT leaving without this, I figured if I had to spend the rest of my life in traction it would be a small price to pay. Thank God I love a challenge, as it took us 30 minutes to move that piece out the door and about 40 feet to the truck. 4 days and a bottle of ibuprofen later, I decided to paint and glaze this baby. There were no finish issues, definitely a new (with in 10 yrs) piece of furniture. It just had such great detail that was lost in the over all stain color. Non-stop for about 8 hrs this paint job took. Using a latex paint, I made my own chalky paint with un-sanded grout in a light gray, glazed with Martha Stewart Mercury (silver) glaze with a smidge of black paint added, concentrating on the beautiful carved accents. The drawer pulls done with Rustoleum spray in Hammered Silver. The very next flea market I did, this buffet found a new home. We offered free delivery to any of the surrounding towns (that morning my husband vehemently told me we would NOT be lugging this piece around to every upcoming flea market, that it had to sell and soon, even if he had to deliver it himself, which I gleefully took him at his word) I still affectionately call this sideboard the back breaker.
