Warning: This is a Political Post! To all our CSA Members & Friends, Neighbors, Musicians and all others who live in Oregon- Several of you have asked us about Measure 92- Labeling GMOs. I am honored to be asked and will gladly give my opinion. The short answer is: PLEASE VOTE YES. I understand many, if not most of you have received mailers saying this labeling bill would hurt small farmers. It won’t hurt us one drop. In fact, I can’t think of anything further from the truth! This bill might hurt Monsanto’s bottom line, but it would not in any way hurt small family farms like ours. The Oregon Farm Bureau (OFB) does NOT speak for us, nor do they act or lobby on our behalf. Indeed, Monsanto is a significant contributor and sponsor of the OFB. If anything, requiring labeling for GE ingredients might actually help us! Here is a list of family farmers, ranchers, granges, chefs, food advocates, grocery stores & food producers who support labeling: oregonrighttoknow.org/endorsements. Those opposed say it will raise the cost of food making it harder for low income folks. This too is totally untrue. Here is one 14-pg study which included research conducted both in the US and internationally. 64 other countries (including the EU, Australia & Japan) all require labeling. And American food companies already label GE foods for foreign markets. Heck, every time they come up with a new marketing angle they change labels. How many items are now ‘gluten-free?’ (even though they were always gluten-free!) Conveniently, Monsanto supported labeling in the UK where it is mandatory: “This is to inform you about the use of biotechnology in food. Monsanto fully supports UK food manufacturers and retailers in their introduction of these labels. We believe you should be aware of all the facts before making a purchase.” oregonrighttoknow.org. As with most things political, follow the money. The majority of GE crops on the market today have been engineered for one purpose: to be more resistant to pesticides. Who opposes this bill? The very same companies who make &/or sell genetically engineered crops or products w/GE ingredients. Monsanto, the makers of both Round Up and Round Up Ready Soybeans (beans that have been genetically engineered to withstand being sprayed with Round Up) is the primary contributor to the No side. Other companies who don’t want you to know are Dow Chemical, Pepsi, General Mills & Hershey. (That alone should make you seriously question any claims.) They just keep repeating false information, scares, and lies in an attempt to protect their bottom line. To be sure, your health, your children’s health, or the health of the planet are not their primary concern. If they believe GE is such a good thing, why not happily blaze it across all their products?
