[Warning: This is all personal opinion. Advance at your own peril.] A collaboration between three fabulous vocalists -- and between a Spaniard, a Mexican, and an Argentine. They won the Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album. I dont follow the Grammys but if great artists like this would gain their deserved recognition more often I maybe would begin to care a tad more. Folk aint dead, kids! Its no longer Woody Guthrie and his dusty guitar (pun intended). It never was just that either. Folk as a cultural art has evolved over the centuries. The more recent styles (mainly associated with political and humanitarian advocacy) have also evolved, just as rock or pop music. Not for better, nor for worse -- it has simply ran its course like every other art form does. Whether you enjoy it or not depends on personal taste. These three womens work embraces their respective culture. They have dedicated their career to maintaining alive a particular cultural art form. This album in collaboration is a modern take on the appropriation that occurs when several cultures interact. The artists are also incredibly talented (duh). And, yknow, Lila Downs has dedicated material to immigration issues (Im not all that familiar with the extent of Niña Pastoris and Soledads work). That said, their Grammy is well-deserved because their music reaches beyond the superficial and beyond itself; its worth a lot more than a catchy beat and a mixture of styles. youtube/watch?v=_8ZHvCTCoAc
