Warning, the following is a short rant about grammar. For those who dislike people that are very particular about proper grammar, please spare yourselves now and continue to the next post on your wall. I find it terribly frustrating that the English language has no grammatically correct option for expressing gender neutrality when it comes to pronouns. Sure, they is widely accepted, but it is not correctly used when addressing a singular entity. Ze and thon exist as proposed options for use in conveying gender neutrality, but there are a couple of major problems that arise pertaining to their use. Firstly, they arent universally accepted terms, but are rather the brain children of like-minded grammar Nazis who tire of the singular they. Secondly, both ze and thon are generally not understood when casually spoken in common language (consequently defeating the purpose of using them at all) due to their infrequency and relative anonymity. The sad truth of things is that despite its grammatical incorrectness, the singular they is the only effective option for gender neutrality. I have to accept that when a person talks about their day, the things that they accomplished, and all of the challenges placed before them, the only option available to me is to smile, nod, and sit quietly by my dish.
