Warning to you all.....Anyone ever see those scam reports on TV and think nah theyll never get me or nah that cant be true? Well this afternoon I had a ph call on my home number from someone who said they were from a federal government claims department and that I had been assessed as due to receive a credit by cheque because Id been incorrectly charged and overpaid some bills, they knew my home ph, my full name and address and they didnt ask me to supply any details. Just so you dont think Im an idiot I am actually awaiting legitimate ph calls from a couple of federal and banking compensation claims so thats why I didnt just hang up immediately. The woman told me an amount was due to me that was a couple of thousand (not millions or billions) and that a cheque would be posted today, she gave me a ref number, a name and a Sydney ph number that I should call (that is funnily enough very similar to the legit dept I called earlier) and verify they were a govt department and that once that call was made the cheque would authorised and she could get the file off her desk. They were terribly convincing, I wasnt even asked for any information just asked to write the ref down and call as soon as convenient. I got off the ph and thought how odd they didnt offer to electronic transfer, what the heck I should check rang scam watch and yep it is a reallly really well organised and convincing scam and apparently they would have started asking for info if I had returned their calls. I was also told that they will probably ph back to remind me and that I should just tell them they have been reported and hang up, I was advised that if I abuse them or anything they will probably start harassing me. In case youre wondering she sounded just like a normal, bored, cranky busy public servant not dodgy at all. Im scared how much seemingly innocent info we all have out in the public domain even though we try to be careful, they were so good that if Id been having a slightly fuzzier day I may have been caught out big time.......true story x n
