Was A Level Playing Field Absent in Osun State ? It is a thousand pities that in spite of the heavy military presence to forestall rigging of any kind APC leaders are still heard complaining of a level playing field in the just concluded Osun State gubernatorial elections. About five governorship elections have so far been held under President Jonathan , no doubt. Had he wanted to use his influence and federal might to manipulate the results to his advantage heavens would not have fallen after all. In the governorships elections that have been conducted so far the ruling party - PDP - also fielded candidates. Out of five it won just one and lost in four states namely Anambra, Edo, Ekiti , Ondo and Osun States. Let us cast our mind back to what happened in the second republic under President Shehu Shagari. In the general elections of 1979 the defunct NPN won some states and and of course the Presidential election that saw the emergence of Shehu Shagari. At the end of his first tenure another general elections took place in 1983 which he won. He did not only win but all the opposition parties lost their states - power of incumbency was doubtless employed here and Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo feathers were clipped and they flew an ordinary pitch and could not do anything to reverse the trend. That is why I often stand in awe of President Jonathans transparent honesty. It is therefore imperative that the president be shielded from criticism by a tribe of desperadoes in the opposition flank whose previous reign plunged Nigeria into none other than abysmal depth. Brethren , we need to rally forces and crush the formidable forces against him to enable him deliver more on his electoral promises to Nigerians. Nigeria rose to become Africas largest economy under President Jonathan. We now have Made in Nigeria cars, rail systems, thriving agro-economy, various infrastructural developments. Has there been anyone like him? Frankly, I do not think so. He remains a living example of what man can be and what he can accomplished in the realm of excellence and virtue.
