Was listening to this biophysicist last night--some clip I clicked into. He said something very interesting about some biological functions--like eyesight, for example. They are not capable of defying the laws of physics, but they have this uncanny habit of pushing up against them pretty solidly. The eye, for example, is so sensitive actually perceive the light from individual photons. If something is allowed by physical law, biological processes might take it to the very limit of whats allowed. Its a very interesting thought, especially since he started talking about superheroes and super powers. While he says that in his opinion all superheroes begin with a power that directly defies physics (I disagree, given that my Kates most assuredly does NOT--at least not her original abilities) it IS possible for us to learn how animals are able to do what they do and imitate it, which might simulate super powers. If you could, for example, learn to imitate both a bats sense of hearing AND its sense of timing... you would have a remarkable advantage. All within the bounds of what is allowed by physics.
