Was recently talking to a great man who has dedicated himself to the service of Bharat Mata. Was talking about the various castes in Karnataka, the 1000s of mathas, Over 12,000 Matha swamis in our state, the dance, art and other things. He is from a family that had to run away from Lahore, to save their lives. After thinking for some time he asked.. do you know? there are hardly any mathas in Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. I asked why? He gave a narrative of Mughal atrocities. It was sad to hear. Then I understood why Khap panchayats are so powerful in those areas. Khaps played the role of Mathas! No wonder our media attacks Khap for every single exception to the rule judgment, but never tell us how Khaps saved Hindus over centuries. Then he asked another interesting thing. Do you know? In Haryana, there is hardly any mild and devotional classical dance among Hindus like Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Kuchipudi.. I asked why. He continued. These are the descendants of peasants who fought Muslim invaders very hard. They refused to give taxes.They refused to convert or surrender. Every day was a struggle to stay alive. So aggression was a part of their life style which has been carried over to this day. If you observe closely most dances from Haryana and Punjab are aggressive peasant dances, not the types you see in south India where dances were primarily in temples. Most importantly, dances in Haryana and Punjab are with lathis in hand!!
