Watch: Train derailed as emergency services take part in major disaster exercise Video loading These are the scenes in Liverpool this morning as emergency services from Merseyside and beyond respond to an unthinkable mock disaster. The training exercise, which has been two years in the making, saw a packed commuter train ‘derailed’ in Croxteth. Carriages spilled onto roads and into buildings, with actors trapped in the train and in cars. Screams from victims could be heard as gas pipes were severed as part of the simulation. Fire crews were first to arrive at Merseyfire’s training academy on Storrington Avenue, with the police and ambulance not far behind. See the response in pictures: 45 agencies from the North West are involved, with almost 1,000 people taking part. Speaking from the scene, Merseyside Police assistant chief constable Darren Martland said: The whole purpose of this is to test the blue light services’ response to a major incident. We’ve got a train derailment, fire, and a number of casualties. This has necessitated a response by not only the police, ambulance and fire services but the military and support agencies. It tests our training, equipment and communications so that in the unlikely event something does happen here on Merseyside, we are prepared for it.
