Watch Your Speech The apostle Paul says in Colossians 4:6 that we choose our words seasoned with salt. Our Lord said: “By your words you will be justified, and by your words condemned”—Matthew 12:37. Another warning is given Exodus 20:7 where God’s people are told: “Do not take the name of the Lord God in Vain.” It is not unusual to hear God’s name used in degradation today. Young people are not taught how sacred the name of God is. Men and women curse frequently (by using God’s name in the mud of human filth). There is no place for such language. God’s people need to be careful when speaking. We are to show Christ living in us! Did our Lord ever use such filthy, sinful language? Another thing that needs to be noted is that often one uses the name of God as a type of by-word. I had thought about using that here, but declined. We should be careful with our language even when we are quoting what someone else has said. God’s name is sacred. Be careful with vain and empty words that drag the name of Jesus, or God, into the mud of worldly things. I should be grateful that I can speak God’s name in reverence rather than in some ungodly way. Be careful. Let your speech be seasoned. Be ready to give answer to anyone, but be sure it is pure speech. Matthew 12:34-37 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart[g] brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
