Watched a film called Margin Call last night. Starring Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany and that Australian actor from The Mentalist, it was the story of a fictional New York banking institution that was first to realise there was a financial meltdown on the cards. Scripted, plotted and filmed in the style of a thriller, it was a nailbiter, even though very few of the characters commanded sympathy. In fact, it was often a case of latching on to the least-worst greedy, manipulative bastard as they all clung to the oft-heard real-life excuse of not fully understanding the financial packages that sent the entire world economy sailing up the Swanee without a paddle. To this viewer that came across rather like ‘I was only obeying orders’ and was just as hollow. Recommended for excellent performances all round and perhaps a small glimpse into the machiavellian machinations that go on within every tall crystal edifice erected for the worship of mammon.
