Watching Who do you think you are with Zooey Deschanel. History of her Quaker ancestors in Lancaster PA who assisted the abolitionists with the Underground Railroad from their farm. Apparently the Christina Riot (Resistance) was held on the grounds, which free black slaves had a stand off with slave owners from Maryland. It was one of the most important events in American History leading to the Civil War. I was not aware that Lancaster had this history with slavery and the Underground Railroad or that the law was passed that slave owners and bounty hunters could go into free Northern States and capture escape slaves and if anyone assisted with hiding these slaves or not return the slaves they were severely punished, or worse. Also freed slaves were rounded up and returned to slavery without any legal court rights. As I stated last night, this program is so interesting!
