Watching the movie Contact which develops the theme of extraterrestrial civilizations contacting us by radio. It is essentially the first way they visit us. That also means it could be the first way we will visit them. The first planet outside the solar system to be directly observed by telescope (the Hubble, of course) orbits a star named Fomalhaut, some 25 light years away. In 1989, I participated in an internationally televized Christmas Eve program that had scores (maybe hundreds) of powerful transmitters beaming audio and video of me into interstellar space.
