Å Ná (Ancient Chant or Arcane Chant) from Cielie, composed, performed, and sung by Suzanna Reeves. ABOUT THE SONG At first, this composition was to have actual lyrics that told a story about “Anna” –piano and percussion with poignant words. I had the tale in my mind, but struggled with a concept and wrestled with words that didn’t want to be written. Thinking that maybe the verses would come to me later, I went ahead and laid down tracks for all the other instruments. Sometimes what you start with isn’t always where you end. As the recordings went along, Å Ná began shaping into a percussive ambient “World” ballad. I liked it so much that I decided to weave in eight percussive vocal tracks among the other instruments. The final combination of the layered voices sounded much like mystical chants. Finally, after putting together the round and harmonizing all the vocals, I felt the song didn’t need actual lyrics. In an effort to re-construct the percussive words that I actually sang, I estimated some lyrics. I entered Å Ná in the John Lennon Song Writing Contest one year just to see what would happen. I wound up as one of the winning finalists in World category. As the announcer stated, it was the first time anyone won for a song with lyrics that weren’t real words. With a group of additional singers, who also played various percussion, together with a few backing tracks, we were able to perform Å Ná live for concerts.
