Wawan Sujarwo: ARG Professional Development Activity - Food Security Team In light of World Food Day, the Australia Awards Alumni Reference Group (ARG) - Food Security Team recently held a workshop in Denpasar, Bali, titled ‘Promoting and Improving Local Horticulture product for Food Security in Indonesia’. The seminar brought together six experts to present and discuss current challenge and strategies in food security in Indonesia based on current data and research. Dr Hendra Yusran Siry, Team Coordinator of the Australia Awards Alumni Reference Group Food Security, delivered the welcome speech, while Prof. Drs I Made Suastra, Vice Rector 4 of Universitas Udayana, officially opened the seminar. Serving as keynote speaker, Dr Ahmad Dimyati, former Director General of Horticulture, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, presented a paper on improving competitiveness of horticulture products as a vehicle for national food security. Prof. Dr Ir. I Nyoman Rai, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Udayana, presented a talk on promoting and improving local horticulture product for sustainable food security in Bali. I Wayan Widia, a farmer and proprietor of Sila Agrotourism, Bedugul, Bali, presented his opinion on how to strengthen small-scale farming in Bedugul to support food security. During the second session, three speakers presented their papers. Prof. Marsetyo, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Tadulako, who is also the recipient of Seed Funding Research ARG Food Security Team, highlighted a paper on revitalising smallholder beef cattle to achieve beef self-sufficiency through the integration farming system. Dr Tajuddin Bantacut, Department of Agro-Industrial Technology, Institut Pertanian Bogor, discussed a paper on adaptations of Indonesia staple food sustainability in the context of continuous climate change. Lastly, an ordinary gardener of the Bali Botanical Garden, Wawan Sujarwo, presented his research on ethno-botanical survey in Bali to conserve biodiversity and cultural values of food and nutraceutical plants.
