Way to go, girls! So proud of you, Jess! From the Cape May Gazette Recognizing some 12-letter varsity athletes Written by Brian Cunniff Wednesday, June 12, 2013 06:29 pm It’s rare in this day and age of specialization in sports to see high school athletes play three sports. It’s even more unique when one is good enough to play three sports at the varsity level for all four of their high school years. But this scholastic year, there are quite a few student-athletes from area schools that will graduate with those credentials. Lower Cape May features three such athletes in Jessica McDowell, Nicole Sangillo and Jillian Vandermark. That trio represents three of only six female athletes in school history to earn 12 varsity letters. McDowell, Sangillo and Vandermark served co-captains of the girls basketball team, with Sangillo earning honorable mention all-star honors. Both Vandermark (first team) and McDowell (honorable mention) were all-stars in field hockey in the fall, with both serving as captains. Sangillo was a captain and first team Cape-Atlantic League all-star as a sweeper for the Lady Tiger girls soccer team that same season. In the spring, Sangilllo was a second team league all-star in lacrosse, Vandermark was an honorable mention selection in softball and McDowell was a second team league all-star in the pole vault in track.
