We All Remember Something about 9/11/2001: I remember leaving work early and right to Mt. Horeb to pick up my daughters and be with my them for the remainder of the day. Scary times for a newly single mom. I called my 13 year old son at his dads and let him talk just to hear his voice among us. I painted, and I wrote… Chasing Butterflies and Shooting the Moon (By Monica Giglio - 2001) With your best friend and a holstered gun And butterfly nets I watched you run And slung on your shoulder, a rifle too Grit and innocence as the butterflies flew On your mission to catch the elusive creatures I remember your childhood charm and features Your golden curls, the sun on your face Swinging your net, you continued the chase They eluded you in the summer breeze Over lush green grass and through the trees Running through the yard and up the hill Laughing and shouting, I see you there still And I savored those moments and swallowed the truth And I captured the imagery of your fleeting youth When you believed nothing was too big or too small Not the moon, nor the butterflies, you’d go for it all No one and nothing could stop you then With a butterfly net, toy guns, and your friend And when you saw the moon in the sky During daylight, you wondered why You said it belongs in the sky at night Not in the daytime, it didn’t seem right Dropping your net, it became a game Raising your gun and taking your aim Attempting to make the moon go away By shooting it out of the sky at day When you believed nothing was too big or too small Not the moon, nor the butterflies, you’d go for it all No one and nothing could stop you then With a butterfly net, toy guns, and your friend Rifle at your shoulder pointed into the blue You drew your pistol from your holster too With your friend at your side you felt big and brave But you couldn’t make the moon behave I thought about how innocence always ends too soon As I watched you chase butterflies and shoot the moon You were chasing butterflies and shooting the moon When passengers became heroes, and towers became a tomb Everything changed for all of us, everything changed too soon And your world changed forever, on September’s day of doom And were hurt and confused and emotions are churning And our lives are still changing as the world keeps turning And times are uncertain, and were learning to cope And I embrace you, and ache for you and seize the hope That I can teach you new normal, that time heals all wounds That youll chase butterflies again, and shoot the moon And youll grow to be a man with a heart that is stronger And Ill watch you chase dreams and fight harder and longer For the things you deserve, and Ill remember when You had a butterfly net, toy guns and your friend When you believed nothing was too big or too small Not the moon, nor the butterflies, you’d go for it all No one and nothing could stop you then With a butterfly net, toy guns, and your friend.
