We Are Now Awake To The Islamic State Threat American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff were recently beheaded by the Islamic State, but they did not die in vain. The nation was shocked by the cruelty, and public opinion polls are demonstrating a rapid shift in views. Isolationism is finally declining on both the left and right, and one third of Democrats now want Obama to be more aggressive. In the past few years many people have advocated an end to the U.S. global leadership era. They wanted America to walk away from the world because of our economic problems. However, the world would not walk away from us. When Winston Churchill spoke at Harvard on September 6, 1943, he said: “The price of greatness is responsibility. . . One cannot rise to be in many ways the leading community in the civilized world without being involved in its problems, without being convulsed by its agonies and inspired by its causes. The people of the United States cannot escape world responsibility.” It was good advice then, and remains so today.
