We MUST do better than this! I am absolutely heart broken. These are the last pictures of this little girl, and were taken this afternoon. Her name is Dora, and she was put to sleep today, just a few minutes after these were taken. Dora never had much of a life. This I could tell from what I observed when I picked her up as a stray just over a week ago. She was only about 4 years old, and it was easy to tell that she had lived her life on the end of a chain. All the signs were there. She had collar marks on her neck, and her ears were badly fly bitten, her fur was sparse in places and she was completely unsocialized...she had led a hard and miserable life. This is just so sad. WE failed her. She was never given the chance to live the happy, playful life she was always meant to live. From her being outside and chained up, she wound up with heartworms...in fact, she was in the latter stages of that. Dammit, we MUST do better than this! It is just that simple. I am becoming so disillusioned with what I am seeing happening. It sucks that because of other people treating their dogs like shit, we are forced into the position of taking them out of the suffering, which is the only reality they have known their whole lives. We MUST do better than this! It is so unfair to them that because of irresponsible humans, they are born, then given to people who subject them to the crappiest life possible, then those humans leave their mess for me, and others, to clean up. If you chain your dog, then you need to try it on yourself...and try it during a thunder storm or snow storm. See how frustrated YOU are after just 10 minutes of being able to move just a few feet in either direction...and then imagine that being your entire life. Sucks, doesnt it?? We MUST do better than this! Then imagine you are on that chain, and you are getting sick. Right now, when you get sick I am sure you stay in bed, in the air conditioning...well, not when you are chained to a tree. In that case you lie in the dirt or some shitty dog house, in the heat or cold, and suffer through it, in most cases never even seeing a vet. We MUST do better than this! If your dog is nothing but a chained up warning that you have company, you should not have a dog. If you are not willing to live how you subject your dog to live..then you do not need a dog. They are meant to be, and desperately WANT to be, part of your family. If Dora had been loved, and had been part of someones family, she would be alive right now and I would not be writing this post with a broken and bleeding heart for her. We MUST do better than this.....goodbye, sweet Dora...none of this was your fault and I am so, so sorry we humans failed you. Perhaps, some day, we WILL do better...perhaps.
