We Owe a Debt By Paul Chappell share on Facebook share on Twitter forward to a friend Thursday, Nov 20, 2014 “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1–2 On August 20, 1940 while Britain stood almost alone against Nazi Germany, believing that a German invasion could come any day, Prime Minister Winston Churchill rose to speak to the House of Commons. After an update on the war situation, he turned to the topic of the Royal Air Force which was valiantly struggling to defend England against air attacks of the far superior German Luftwaffe. Churchill said, “The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Christians have a history filled with heroes of the faith. We can look back on the lives of those men and women who believed the promises of God and lived according to them regardless of the cost or consequences. Even more importantly, we have the example of Jesus who faithfully followed the will of His Father, even to the cross. It is our duty to show our appreciation and gratitude for this amazing heritage by following their example and running our own race with focus and purity until we reach Heaven. Today’s Renewal Principle: To those who have walked faithfully before us, and most of all to the Saviour, we owe a great debt of gratitude.
