We Will Set Up Our Banners Psalms 20:5 We will rejoice in your salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions. History is full of flags, or banners, that symbolized nations, or movements, or groups. Besides our own stars and stripes, there is the union jack of Great Britain, the tricolor of France, and the crescent moon of Islam, More infamously, there are the swastika of Nazi Germany, the hammer and sickle of communism, and the skull and crossbones of the pirates. A banner, to use the terminology of this passage, identifies a group of people, a nation, or a cause. It implies membership, or citizenship, identification, even ownership. In times of battle, a banner was a rallying point, and if it fell to the ground, the cause might well be lost. Many in my generation and culture will remember an old hymn called “The Banner of the Cross”: Theres a royal banner given for display To the soldiers of the King; As an ensign fair we lift it up today, While as ransomed ones we sing. Refrain Marching on, marching on, For Christ count everything but loss! And to crown Him King, well toil and sing, Neath the banner of the cross! The cross of Yeshua is an instrument of shame and punishment that was transformed into a symbol of redemption and triumph. Our faith doesnt end there; it begins there, and continues through the glorious reality of the resurrection. God sees us through the blood of the cross, where our own flesh is crucified. Yeshua said that, when He was lifted up, He would draw all men to Him (John 12:32). Isaiah wrote that God would lift up a banner on the mountains, and all the earth would see (Isaiah 18:3). So, does that mean the banner we rally around is the cross? Perhaps, but Yeshua said He would draw all men “to Him,” not to the cross itself. It is Yeshua we identify with, He that we belong to, and in Him we have our being. HE is our salvation, and in HIM we rejoice! HIS is the name we rally around, and it is HE who leads the hosts of Heaven to victory over the enemy! He is Yahweh-Nissi, Yahweh our Banner (Exodus 17:15)! Under His banner, we have victory. Under His banner, every petition is answered and realized. We will rejoice in Him, and under Yeshua our Salvation we will find deliverance, and comfort, and protection, and the fulfillment of every promise and blessing. His army is never defeated, His victory is assured, and His reign is from everlasting to everlasting. HaleluYAH! Raise up your heads, lift up your voices, for HE ALONE is WORTHY! Prayer: Let us not keep silent, Yahweh Elohim, but let us set up the banners proclaiming who we are, and whose we are! Grant that we may proudly and boldly proclaim that You are our banner in Yeshua, and let us exalt Him and lift HIM high! We will never be defeated, never be afraid, never bow down to any but You alone! You are Yahweh-Nissi, in Yeshua! Amen! Brenda K.
