We all love working with Mr. Eli! He is just the sweetest! Meet our new PTC Star--ELI: Our little Eli is the sweetest boy. He has always been our quite child. His sister did enough talking for all of our children so we did not think it was odd when Eli was a late talker and never thought much of his sensory issues or his lisp when he talked because these are all things that his father struggled with as a child. When our youngest son, Abram, was diagnosis with Autism at the age of 18 months we started the intense research of what Autism was and found out that our Eli had almost all of the characteristics of Aspergers syndrome. So, we took Eli to be tested and at the age of six Eli was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Along with that we then started medically based therapies at PTC for OT, PT and speech. When we started at PTC over a year ago, Eli was hard to understand with his speech to the point we had to ask him to repeat himself almost every time we had a conversation with him. He could not go through a single PE class without getting hurt and he was so under weight because his sensory issues only allowed him to be able to eat about five foods. Eli’s lack of willingness to eat was very rough on the whole family. We had to keep our house at 75 degrees and he would sit with his winter coat on to keep warm, he was tired all the time with bags under his eyes and always looked like he didn’t feel well. So last summer, his OT’s suggested food group and we were so desperate for help we said yes without a second thought. Over the course of food group we really saw a big change in Eli. He as trying new foods, asking for seconds and cleaning most of his plate at dinner! Eli has never liked potatoes, ever! Not mashed, not as a French fry, not boiled, nothing!! But I remember the night we were out at a restaurant and I could see the disgust on his face but he took the skills he had learned at food group and ate a whole plate of French fries!! I about fell over. Now he eats his brother’s leftover fries all the time! A couple of months ago we were eating dinner and he asked to try a shrimp and ate the whole thing! Thanks to the skills Eli has learned at PTC he has put on weight, he no longer needs to wear a coat in the house, he has color to his skin and his bags are gone from under his eyes. He has gone up a pant size for the first time in a year and a half! His speech is wonderful! We no longer have to ask him to repeat himself several times to understand what he is saying and Eli loves going to PE because of the self confidence the PT’s have given him! Thanks to PTC my son is thriving and is turning in to such a great kid! Eli proudly announces his Aspergers syndrome to anyone who will listen because the therapist and staff at PTC have taught him how to cope with the things that were making him feel different and now he embraces those differences and makes them work in his everyday life! As much as we are at PTC it has become a second home and my boys are who they are today because of them! Without them I truly feel Eli would be really sick and frustrated but today he is healthy, happy and thriving in his own skin and for a child with disabilities that is amazing! Thank you PTC for saving our boys! -Cathey, Eli’s mother
