We are a Virginian family of 5 (3 boys – ages 8, 3, and 1), single income, and my oldest son, Wes, just relapsed with stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer. Wes is a young boy with a heart for the environment/saving the planet like no other and a dream to meet David Tennant as well as be on his favorite show, Doctor Who someday. He relapsed on 2/4/14 after two years of clear scans, and now our entire family has to relive this nightmare all over again. Wes was initially diagnosed at 5 years old with a 13cm tumor consuming most of his left adrenal gland and lymph nodes in his neck. As of March 2014, he has already spent 20 weeks inpatient and has undergone 10 cycles of chemo, 14 rounds of radiation, 4 surgeries (one of which took his left adrenal gland and kidney), 8 cycles of antibody, 6 rounds of accutane, a stem cell apheresis, and more blood transfusions, scans, needle injections, and bone marrow biopsies than I can count. Cancer wreaked havoc on our family financially, emotionally, and physically in every way possible. As his mom, I spend every evening researching clinical trials. There is no protocol set in place for relapsed neuroblastoma and the prognosis is not good. We will be spending a lot of time in NYC at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where Wes is currently a patient. He is receiving 4 rounds of chemo and surgery hoping that his four abdominal tumors will respond before deciding which trial is worth taking the chance. If not, then we are back to picking another treatment that may or may not help him. On the last CT scan the doctors found that he has multiple fungal abscesses on his liver that are believed to have been caused by antibiotics and neutropenia. Wes has already endured so much and the battle is far from over, but he holds strong with a smile on his face and a heart for others. https://facebook/Wes.Fight.Against.NB Please visit Wes page and share some love and support! #endchildhoodcancer #gogold
