We are celebrating our 2 year anniversary today. We opened the doors to the Art in the Heart gallery at 10am, 2nd October 2012. The Art in the Heart concept however was founded January 2012 when we assembled 13 artists to exhibit in the Visitor Information Centre under the banner of City Centre Regeneration and Aspiration. The Art in the Heart CIC company was incorporated July 2012. The seeds were sewn back in March 2011, when Harriets Art Gallery (above Harriets Tea Room) started to fly the banner for visual art on the hight street. Remember that? The gallery launch brought 75 paying guests from political and business circles for champagne and canapes, £15.00 a shot. God knows that I had my fair share of scoffing, outrage and general mistrust from certain circles about that!! Not that I gave a hoot about what anyone thought and not such a bad idea after all?? Then we had the City Treasures Exhibition and a whole host of folk came in to see it, weaving in and out of tongues licking cream off scones and little fingers raised from china teacups. Thank God I had a card terminal even then because we really needed it. I realised the absolute desperation from people wanting an accessible visual art hub. I felt passionate about being in tune with the public, the folk passing by. They were euphoric about this space even with its swirly carpets, disgusting lamp shades and suspect odours!!!! But from this rather awful tearoom decor came eventually Art in the Heart on Bridge Street (this time with wood chip haha). We know its not perfect, but its survived solely on a local economy with no funding. Weve worked on the principle of offering a place that people can come into with no obligation, with workshops and events, but which offers quality and originality with a full range of price point. We strive for the best both culturally but also commercially in a retail sense. Its a hard juggling act but we have a great team. Hope you like it and enjoy it and hope you have liked our page.
