We are delighted to share with you the announcement below regarding one-day gardening internships available at three small farms in St Margarets Bay. This is the official launch of our first Transition Bay local currency project. ‘Carats’, a tradable local currency, will be earned by interns and is redeemable at any time for fruits or vegetables within a 15 month period by any of the participating farms that are issuing Carats to their interns. .......................................................................................... Gardening Internships Available in St Margarets Bay Several small-scale farms in St Margarets Bay are offering internships in fruit and vegetable production. This is an opportunity to gain first hand experience in gardening for a wide range of crops, including most vegetables, flowers, berry crops, grapes and orchards. An intern must commit for at least one full day of work at one of the farms, based on the scheduled work days for each farm. Signing up for more than one day of work is encouraged. Each work day starts at 8:30am and ends at 5:00pm with a hearty farm lunch provided. Interns are requested to bring work gloves and boots, water bottle, sun hat, sunscreen and bug repellent. Carats: Gardening money redeemable in produce In addition to the excellent learning opportunity provided by these internships, interns will be paid in ‘Carats’, a tradable local currency, which is redeemable at any time for fruits or vegetables within a 15 month period by any of the participating farms that are issuing Carats to their interns. You will be paid at least a minimum wage in Carats for your time working on a farm, and your Carats can be redeemed at the current market value of fruits and vegetables when in season, any time this year or next growing season. You can receive Carats at one farm, and you (or anyone else you give the Carats to) can redeem them at the same farm or another issuing farm. transitionbay.ca/content/local-currency INTERNSHIP LOCATIONS: Berry Ridge Farm Berry Ridge is a small, predominately organic farm overlooking the ocean at Boutiliers Point owned by Phil Warman, PhD, PAg.
