All About Animals Rescue uses Found Animals 134.2 kHz ISO (International Standards Organization) microchips. A microchip is a small RFID device about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted beneath your pets skin between the shoulder blades. It’s injected just like a vaccination. The microchip contains a number that is unique to your pet. The microchip number must be read by a universal microchip scanner commonly found at all shelters and vet hospitals. This unique number is associated with your contact information in an online registry that allows shelters, clinics, veterinarians, and humane organizations to contact you if your lost pet is found. The microchip itself does not store your contact information. A microchip is not a GPS or tracking device; you cannot get information on a lost pets location directly from the microchip. It is only when your lost pet is found, scanned for the unique number, and searched in the online registry that someone will be able to contact you. It is critical to keep your contact information current in the free online microchip registry in order for your lost pet to be reunited with you.
