We are not political at The Mandalay Projects, but we do watch with interest developments and of course we have to be aware. For Burma watchers, students of democracy and of course for the Burmese people themselves, 2015 promisses to be a significant year in Myanmars political history. This is a clip of Aung San Suu Kyis (ASSK) father taken in London in January 1947. Less than 6 month later he was assassinated in Yangon (ASSK was 2 years old at the time) and in January the very next year Myanmar once again became an independent nation. However, in General Aung Sans absence the country descended into military rule. In 1990 ASSKs party, the National League for Democracy won 59% of the votes at a general election, however the generals refused to acknowledge the win and remained in charge. After spending more than 15 years under house arrest and making unthinkable personal sacrifices ASSK was finally elected to parliament in 2012 by-elections. So in 2015, Myanmar is to hold general elections and we will see if the work of her father all those years ago, and her work over a lifetime, will finally come to fruition with an independent and democratic Myanmar.
