We are right when we say that white flight from cities such as Baltimore and Detroit hurt those predominantly black cities. But white flight was inevitable. The thing that hurt black communities and cities the most was the black middle class flight from black neighborhoods. Had that not taken place Baltimore and Detroit and blacks in general would have been far further along. Black middle class flight from our neighborhoods meant a loss of cultural and economic capital that also sent the destructive message that success was all about severing ties with our own communities and going to integrate away from our people. Dr King was never about integration. He was about civil and equal rights for all. The problem within Brown was that it equated integration with equality. They should just have said all kids can go to any school and all schools will be made equal in resources asap.
