We are sad to relay the news of the death of George Chipman. Even though he was not born in Welland, from the time he arrived here to take a position as manager at the Bank of Nova Scotia he was a keen promoter of all things Welland. Mr. Chipman was a member of the Welland Historical Society during the 1970’s when the Society established the Museum at it first location on South Pelham Street. He later served many years as President of the Society and as a member of the Museum’s Board of Management. In 2010 Mr. Chipman donated his collection of over 20,000 pieces of Welland memorabilia, ranging from the largest advertising signs to small items like business cards, to the Welland Museum. Selections from the George E. Chipman and Family Collection have since been on display at the Museum on a rotating basis in a room and a case dedicated for that purpose. Mr. Chipman served on numerous other City organizations and committees, including the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC), now Heritage Welland. His appointment on Welland LACAC spanned almost 20 years, and during his time as Chair of that City subcommittee, he was instrumental in getting many unique heritage buildings in the City protected under the Ontario Heritage Act. Visitation for Mr. Chipman will be at Cudney’s Funeral Home this afternoon 2-4 pm and evening 6-8 pm and his funeral will be held at Central United Church tomorrow at 1 pm, with visitation from noon. Rest Peacefully George! yourlifemoments.ca/sitepages/obituary.asp?oId=839764
