We are talking tonight of the assassination of JFK. I was in an office in San Franciscos financial district when the news came in --- working as a young insurance claims examiner. I well remember the shock, the tears, the horror. Soon the office was empty. People had gone out to watch the television screens in the bars --- to commiserate, to cry. But little did we know how dark would be the coming years --- with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Bobby Kennedy. It has taken decades to recover from those horrifying events. I cannot forget the riots at the 1968 Chicago Democratic convention, or the shocks of Watergate, or the resignation of Nixon. Pray we never go through such things again. We are a resilient nation. We learn from our mistakes and our dark times.
