We are visiting Tacloban, the town that was devastated by the strongest typhoon in history (Yolanda) in 2013. I estimated 1/3 of the town is still destroyed, many millions of donations from around the world seems to have been siphoned off into the pockets of the corrupt administrators. There are many heart breaking stories from people who survived but lost their whole families. One young boy is crying as he tells us his story. He is now an orphan having lost his family and only left with the scars mental and physical. One woman is holding back her tears as she shows us the photograph of her pregnant daughter who died in the typhoon. We visited one of the many depressed towns that have sprung up because people were swept away. This is the port area and the site is totally unreal. Huge cargo ships and ferry boats are blown into the land . We walk through the town and speak to the people who are pleased to see us and tell their stories . Not one person is begging from us even though they are living in total poverty. We leave with great admiration for these people and a sick feeling in our stomach. We can still see them smiling but behind those smiles is the painful experienced they had. This is a monument to man’s greed. The people have such spirit. TACLOBAN will rise again.
